Singer Terry Hall spoke about all things vinyl during a discussion in London about the format’s recent revival. Terry was invited to the #WhyVinylMatters discussion held at the Rough Trade east record shop, off Brick Lane in London, by pop culture writer Jennifer Otter Bickerdike. Jennifer was promoting her book, Why Vinyl Matters, in which she explores the recent revival of vinyl and interviews ist of big-name artists and icons, including Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess, Supergrass’s Gaz Coombes, hip-hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy and many more. The two panelists were joined by Julia Ruzicka, owner of a small record label and band member of Future of The Left, who put questions to both singer and author. During the chat on October 26, Terry explained how John Peel’s first play of Gangsters by The Specials helped the band to chart success, how his admiration of the band 10cc was the reason The Colour Field recorded one of their albums at their Strawberry Studios in Stockport, and he cited David Cassidy’s Rock Me Baby as his favourite ever LP cover. As for records themselves, he hailed David Bowie’s Young Americans and Richard Hell and the Voodoids’ Blank Generation LPs as his favourites. 10cc’s Greatest Hits was the last piece of vinyl he bought and his next purchase would be a Melanie album that he’d seen in a charity shop window a couple of days previously. The first record Terry remembers buying was by The Move, for which he paid about 10p, “though I didn’t really like it,” he told the audience. Here’s a small selection of photos from the #WhyVinylMatters event featuring Terry Hall… [Show...read more

Specials singer Terry Hall has been interviewed in the entertainment section of some West Midlands newspapers ahead of the band’s three dates performing with Toots and the Maytals. Talking about the date at the NEC in Birmingham (on May 26), Terry said: “I’m looking forward to it because it’s near where I grew up and Birmingham and Coventry are areas I know really well. I spent a lot of my youth in Birmingham and it’s always been difficult finding the right venue, in Coventry. So when this NEC thing was added we were pleased. It’s an outdoor thing, so it should be good fun. I’m not sure where at the NEC we play. It’s outdoors. I don’t know where. The car park?” Terry added that he has been writing for the past few years but is unsure what will happen with the body of work he has produced. “I’m painting and I’ve been collecting that work. I’ve also been writing for four or five years and there’s a body of work. I might make another album or turn it into a book, I don’t know. It’s enjoyable because there’s no pressure to. “There’ll be a time for a solo record or something. But I’ve been really happy being part of The Specials again.” The Specials play three outdoor gigs over the May bank holiday weekend. You can read the full Terry Hall interview...read more

The Specials have paid tribute in song to former band members John ‘Brad’ Bradbury and Rico Rodriguez on their current UK tour. The band are performing We have All The Time in The World while Lynval takes up mic duties on a cover of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, a song he sang at Brad’s funeral. At their Rock City gig in Nottingham, Lynval finished Redemption Song by raising his arms and calling out the names of his two former band members. On Facebook, Golding’s daughter Michelle said: “Lynval said that when they were thinking about how to pay tribute to their lost brother, Terry suggested ‘We Have All The Time In The World’. Lynval instantly thought it was a beautiful way to think of Brad and said it feels incredibly uplifting to perform it in the encore.” Michelle added: “Lynval sang Redemption at Brads funeral and when Ispoke to him this week he thought it would be really emotional for him to do live but was determined to honour Brad. Its been one hell of an emotional journey losing Brad this year.” The Specials – We Have All The Time in The World The Specials – Redemption Song Footage filmed at Rock City, Nottingham.
